Meet Merilyn. After decades of living with a severe autoimmune lung disease, followed by heart failure and prediabetes, Merilyn found herself struggling to walk even short distances and wondering what the future would hold.

She had overcome incredible health challenges before, but this time felt different.

At 77 years old, she was determined to regain control of her health one more time.

A Lifetime of Health Challenges

Merilyn's health journey began in her early twenties when she was diagnosed with a severe autoimmune lung disease and told it was terminal.

With two young children to raise, giving up was never an option. After years of hospitalizations, intensive care admissions, and high-dose cortisone treatments, she eventually found a biochemist and nutritionist who introduced her to a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle.

The results transformed her life.

She reduced her medications, avoided frequent hospitalizations, returned to full-time work, and built a life she once thought would never be possible.

But over the years, stress, family responsibilities, and inconsistent eating habits gradually took their toll. Her weight climbed to 207 pounds, and her health began declining again.

By 2024, she was diagnosed with heart failure and prediabetes. Her A1c had reached 6.2%, her triglycerides were elevated, inflammatory markers were high, and even walking to the mailbox had become difficult.

Finding Her Way Back

After her prediabetes diagnosis, Merilyn joined Mastering Diabetes University.

The results came quickly. She lost weight, improved her health, and successfully reversed her prediabetes.

Feeling confident after six months, she decided to continue on her own. But over time, old habits slowly returned, and her progress began slipping away.

Rather than becoming discouraged, she made a different decision. She rejoined the program and committed to following it completely.

This time, she stopped trying to modify the plan. She relied on the 6-Week Insulin Sensitizing Meal Plan, revisited the educational material, participated consistently in coaching calls, engaged with the community, and tracked her nutrition carefully.

As Merilyn puts it, "The diet worked as fast as before. The difference this time was that I stopped trying to vary the diet outside of the rules."

Merilyn's Before and After Results

Today, Merilyn weighs 139 pounds, representing a 24-pound loss since joining Mastering Diabetes University and an incredible 68-pound loss from her highest weight.

Her fasting glucose and fasting insulin are now in the ideal range, her liver enzymes have improved significantly, and perhaps most importantly, she has regained confidence that she can maintain these results for years to come.

What once felt overwhelming has become a sustainable lifestyle built on simple daily habits.

What Made the Difference?

For Merilyn, the biggest lesson wasn't discovering another diet. It was learning the power of consistency.

She realized lasting transformation doesn't come from occasional healthy choices. It comes from making those choices every day.

She also credits the coaching program and community for helping her stay engaged and accountable. Along the way, she discovered new favorite meals, including Lentil Vegetable Soup, Black Bean and Mango Salad, and Roasted Vegetable and White Bean Salad.

One lesson from the Advanced Course continues to guide her every day: "Who will you be 365 days from now?"

What Merilyn Wants Others to Know

At the beginning of her journey, Merilyn's motivation was simply to remain independent.

Today, her purpose is even greater.

She wants to experience life fully, appreciate each day, and continue caring for her health so she can enjoy the years ahead.

Her advice is simple: Stay consistent.

Transformation doesn't require perfection. It comes from making the right choices repeatedly, trusting the process, and remembering that every healthy decision moves you closer to the future you want.

At 79 years old, Merilyn is living proof that it is never too late to reverse prediabetes, improve your health, and create a future filled with vitality and purpose.
