Meet David. When David first discovered Mastering Diabetes, he had already started trying to change on his own.

For two weeks before joining coaching, he followed the book as best he could, hoping it might help lower his blood sugar naturally. Even in those early days, he noticed something surprising.

By May of the following year, his A1c had dropped from 6.3 to 5.3.

He lost 45 pounds, stabilized his blood sugar, eliminated arthritis pain in his hands, dramatically improved his sleep, and regained energy he had not felt in decades.

Feeling Younger Than He Had in Years

One of the most remarkable parts of David’s story is how dramatically his quality of life changed.

Before starting the program, he felt old, sluggish, and tired. He struggled with energy and had accepted many of those symptoms as a normal part of aging.

He treated his new lifestyle as a daily practice rather than a temporary diet.

Every day, he logged his meals, tracked his blood sugar, and stayed accountable. He batch prepared his own food and quickly developed habits that became non-negotiable.

His six personal non-negotiables were:

  1. Daily accountability
  2. Eating at least two cups of beans every day
  3. Greens with every meal
  4. Walking after every meal
  5. Walking at least 15,000 steps per day
  6. A 16–18 hour overnight fasting window

These habits compounded over time.

As he consistently walked after meals, he noticed his blood sugar stabilized even more. Eventually, he was walking four miles per day and strength training three times per week.

The routine became his lifestyle.

Falling in Love With the Food

One of the most surprising aspects of the program for David was how much he enjoyed the food.

Instead of feeling restricted, he found meals satisfying and enjoyable. He began experimenting with recipes, preparing his own batch-cooked meals, and even baking fermented buckwheat bread himself.

One of his favorite discoveries was peanut butter hummus spread on homemade buckwheat bread or Pasha bread. That combination helped him feel satisfied while maintaining excellent blood sugar control.

He also added greens to nearly every meal, often layering leafy greens underneath his food to increase his intake naturally.

Daily green smoothies became another staple. As his coach described it, he fully embraced the process.

Better Sleep, Better Energy, Better Life

David had struggled with sleep for years before joining the program.

Less than two months after starting, he reported sleeping an extra hour every night.

That improvement alone made a major difference in his daily energy and recovery.

Over time, the changes compounded. He no longer felt exhausted during the day. His body felt lighter. His joints no longer hurt. His mood improved. Even simple activities felt easier.

Motivation Bigger Than Himself

He has four young grandchildren and wanted to stay healthy long enough to watch them grow up and graduate from high school.

He also wanted to keep up with his wife, who is ten years younger and loves hiking and backpacking.

Before changing his lifestyle, he worried he would not be able to continue doing those activities alongside her. Now, he feels capable, energized, and optimistic about the future.

A Complete Lifestyle Transformation

By the end of his first year, David no longer viewed this as a program. This was simply his life now.

He had fully integrated the habits into his daily routine and no longer felt like he was “trying” to be healthy. The process became natural.

He batch cooked his meals, maintained his walking routine, stayed active outdoors in Washington State even during the cold months, and consistently prioritized his health.

Most importantly, he felt better than he had in years.
