  • How Dr. Yunus Lowered His A1C From 10.8 to 5.9 and Eliminated Diabetes Medication in 6 Months

Meet Dr. Asim Yunus. As a cardiac electrophysiologist in Michigan, when he first saw his blood sugar reading, he was shocked.

He had spent his career treating serious heart conditions, implanting pacemakers, and helping patients manage dangerous arrhythmias. He understood chronic disease and its long-term consequences better than most people.

At the time, Dr. Yunus was also dealing with MAFLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease) and had a history of metastatic prostate cancer, making the diagnosis feel even more urgent and serious.

His physician immediately became concerned and even considered hospitalization.

At that moment, Dr. Yunus understood exactly what the diagnosis could mean. Progressive medication use. Declining pancreatic function. Vascular disease. Kidney complications. Heart disease. A lifetime of management rather than recovery.

But instead of accepting that path, he decided to search for another option.

Facing a Diagnosis That Felt Like a Slippery Slope

At the start of his journey, he weighed above his target weight of 166 pounds and was facing multiple overlapping health concerns at once.

As a physician, he understood how type 2 diabetes is traditionally viewed in medicine. Patients are often told the disease is chronic, progressive, and ultimately irreversible. The standard approach centers around management: medication, more medication, insulin, and eventually the treatment of complications.

He had watched this progression happen repeatedly in clinical medicine, but he also understood something else.

If insulin resistance is driving the disease process, then addressing insulin resistance directly might change the outcome entirely.

Together with his wife, Terri, he began searching for solutions beyond conventional management. That search led them to Mastering Diabetes.

Discovering a Different Way to Think About Diabetes

What resonated most deeply with Dr. Yunus was not just the nutritional approach itself, but the physiology behind it.

The explanation of insulin resistance immediately made sense to him medically.

He understood the concept of liver and muscle cells becoming resistant to insulin signaling, forcing the body into a cycle where the liver continuously produces glucose while the pancreas works harder and harder to compensate.

For him, this was not simply about avoiding sugar or counting calories. It was about correcting a dysfunctional metabolic system.

That distinction changed everything.

Finding Structure During an Overwhelming Time

Even with his medical training, Dr. Yunus admits the diagnosis initially felt emotionally overwhelming. That is why the structure of the program became so important.

Rather than expecting him to figure everything out on his own, the program provided a clear framework. Recipes. Grocery guidance. Coaching. Weekly accountability. Daily direction.

He describes his Mastering Diabetes coach as a lifesaver.

Every week, his coach reviewed blood sugar trends, discussed meals, monitored progress, and helped guide adjustments. Instead of feeling lost or fearful, he felt supported and in control.

For someone facing a serious diagnosis, that clarity became incredibly powerful.

Rapid Improvements Without Medication Dependency

When Dr. Yunus first began the program, he was taking the standard dose of metformin prescribed for newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

But as he learned more about insulin resistance and began implementing the protocol consistently, his numbers improved rapidly.

Within approximately three months, he completely discontinued medication. And the improvements continued.

Dr. Yunus’s Before and After Results

Over the course of approximately six months, Dr. Yunus experienced dramatic changes across multiple health markers.

In just six months, his A1c dropped nearly five full percentage points. His blood glucose stabilized into the low 100 range, and he eliminated all diabetes medication entirely.

But the numbers were only part of the story.

Improvements Far Beyond Blood Sugar

One of the most meaningful aspects of Dr. Yunus’s transformation was how dramatically his overall quality of life improved.

Given his history of metastatic prostate cancer and MAFLD, regaining a sense of vitality and control over his health carried an even deeper emotional significance. Even basic daily activities often felt more difficult than they should have.

As his insulin sensitivity improved, those symptoms began disappearing.

His energy returned. His mood improved. He slept better. He felt mentally clearer and physically stronger.

He describes himself today as an entirely different person than he was at diagnosis.

Even routine physical tasks around the house became easier. Activities he once avoided now felt manageable again.

For Dr. Yunus, this was not simply about diabetes. It was about reclaiming his health.

Understanding Why the Program Worked

As a physician, Dr. Yunus appreciated that the program addressed the underlying physiology rather than simply suppressing symptoms.

He explains diabetes as a complex communication breakdown between the liver, muscles, pancreas, and insulin signaling pathways. When insulin resistance develops, cells struggle to absorb glucose effectively, forcing the liver to continue releasing more glucose into circulation.

That cycle drives disease progression.

What impressed him most about Mastering Diabetes was the simplicity of the intervention despite the complexity of the disease itself.

By reducing dietary fat, improving insulin sensitivity, increasing fiber intake, and supporting movement and recovery, the body began regulating glucose more normally again.

For him, the science aligned perfectly with the clinical results he experienced personally.

Regaining a Sense of Control

Dr. Yunus repeatedly returns to one central theme when describing the program: Control.

A diabetes diagnosis often creates fear because people feel powerless over what comes next. They worry about complications, medication escalation, and long-term decline.

Mastering Diabetes changed that.

Instead of feeling like his future was out of his hands, he felt empowered to actively influence his health every day through his choices.

That emotional shift became just as important as the lab work itself.

He now approaches life with a completely different level of optimism and confidence.

The Emotional Side of Change

Dr. Yunus also acknowledges that making dietary changes is emotionally challenging.

Food is deeply tied to comfort, habits, and identity. Giving up familiar foods can feel overwhelming at first. But he believes the improvements happen quickly enough that motivation builds naturally.

As energy improves, blood sugar stabilizes, and overall well-being increases, the process begins reinforcing itself. The better he felt, the easier consistency became.

What Dr. Yunus Wants Others to Know

Dr. Yunus understands why people feel skeptical or overwhelmed after a diabetes diagnosis.

As a physician, he once viewed diabetes through the traditional lens of chronic management.

His experience changed that perspective completely.

He now believes that many people living with type 2 diabetes can dramatically improve, and potentially eliminate, the condition by addressing insulin resistance directly.

But first, they have to believe improvement is possible.
