I’m Not Type 2 Diabetic Anymore (30 Pounds Gone in 3 Months)

Meet Tom. For years, Tom believed that managing diabetes meant managing numbers. Counting carbs. Avoiding fruit. Watching blood sugar rise and fall no matter how hard he tried to do the “right” things. Like many people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, he was told that high blood sugar was the problem and that restriction was the solution. What he did not realize was that the real issue was insulin resistance, and once he addressed that root cause, everything changed faster than he ever imagined.

In just three and a half months, Tom lowered his A1c from diabetic levels into the normal range, lost nearly 30 pounds, stabilized his blood sugar, regained his energy, and completely transformed his relationship with food. Today, he no longer identifies as someone struggling to control diabetes. Instead, he feels healthy, confident, and optimistic about his future.

Living With Rising Blood Sugar and Limited Options

Before discovering Mastering Diabetes, Tom’s health followed a familiar pattern. His highest recorded A1c reached 7.7, placing him firmly in the type 2 diabetes range. Even after making efforts to improve his diet, his A1c remained elevated, sitting at 7.2 when he officially began the program. His weight had climbed to 212 pounds, and his daily blood glucose readings often fluctuated between the 140s and 150s.

Like many people, Tom had tried traditional approaches before. Years earlier, he followed a calorie-counting program and experienced some short-term success. But the constant tracking, combined with a busy life that included coaching sports and leading youth activities, made it unsustainable. Fast food inevitably found its way back into his routine, and the weight returned. Over time, he began to accept that this cycle might simply be his reality.

What frustrated him most was the feeling that he was always reacting rather than improving. Despite effort, discipline, and intention, his numbers never truly normalized. He wanted something that worked in real life, not just on paper.

A New Perspective on Diabetes and Insulin Resistance

Everything shifted when a former coworker recommended the Mastering Diabetes book. From the very first chapters, Tom felt something click. The science resonated with him. Instead of framing diabetes as a condition that required lifelong restriction, the book explained insulin resistance as the true root cause and showed how improving insulin sensitivity could naturally lower blood sugar.

For the first time, Tom understood that high blood sugar was not the disease itself but a symptom. That realization reframed everything. He was no longer fighting numbers. He was working to restore his body’s ability to handle glucose effectively.

He started slowly, following the guidance to change just one meal a day. Almost immediately, weight began to drop without effort or deprivation. Encouraged by these early results, he decided to commit fully and enrolled in the full Mastering Diabetes Coaching Program.

Letting Go of Fear Around Food

One of Tom’s biggest hesitations going into the program was food. He worried that a whole-food, plant-based approach would feel restrictive or that he would miss the foods he enjoyed. For years, he had been told to limit carbohydrates and avoid fruit, despite always having a natural love for sweet, fresh foods.

That fear disappeared quickly.

As he followed the meal plans, Tom discovered something unexpected. He could eat more food, not less. He began starting his mornings with large fruit bowls, often eating three cups of fruit at breakfast. Strawberries, bananas, apples, pears, and berries became staples instead of forbidden foods. These fruits satisfied his sweet cravings in a way that processed foods never had.

He also learned how to build balanced meals that felt both nourishing and enjoyable. Berry salads over spinach with balsamic vinegar, flax seeds, legumes, vegetables, and hearty plant-based dishes became part of his routine. Rather than feeling deprived, he felt satisfied and energized.

Food stopped being a source of stress and became a source of consistency and joy.

Results That Came Faster Than Expected

Within the first four weeks of following the program, Tom retested his A1c. It had dropped from 7.2 to 6.4, a result that genuinely shocked him. He had never seen numbers that low before, even after years of trying. That moment solidified his belief that this approach was different.

As the weeks continued, his progress accelerated. His blood glucose readings steadily declined, moving from the 140s and 150s into the 120s and low 130s, and eventually stabilizing even lower as his insulin sensitivity improved. His energy increased noticeably, and exercise became something he enjoyed rather than avoided.

He found himself trying foods he had previously ignored or dismissed. Butternut squash, once considered too time-consuming to prepare, became a favorite. Experimentation replaced hesitation, and routine replaced confusion.

Beyond the numbers, Tom felt lighter, fitter, and healthier than he had been in decades. He described feeling better physically than at any point in the last 30 years, not just because of weight loss, but because his body finally felt supported instead of strained.

Structure, Support, and Sustainability

One of the most impactful aspects of the program for Tom was structure. Meal planning had always been a challenge for his household. With weekly menus and consistent ingredients, planning became simple instead of overwhelming. Food waste decreased. Stress disappeared. Consistency became automatic.

Eating similar meals throughout the week removed decision fatigue and allowed him to focus on living his life rather than managing diabetes all day long. That structure gave him freedom, not limitation.

As his habits solidified, exercise naturally became part of his routine. With more energy and better recovery, he found himself moving more and enjoying it. His health improvements reinforced his motivation, creating a positive feedback loop that felt sustainable for the first time.

A New Relationship With Health and Life

Today, Tom no longer sees himself as someone struggling with type 2 diabetes. He sees himself as someone who understands how his body works and how to support it. His lab work continues to improve, but more importantly, his quality of life has changed.

He feels confident, capable, and optimistic. He enjoys food. He enjoys movement. He enjoys life.

The greatest gift he gained from the program was not just lower numbers, but the knowledge that he is truly getting healthier and that he now has the tools to stay that way.

What Tom Wants Others to Know

For anyone hesitant to try something different, Tom’s advice is simple. Be willing to experiment. Let go of fear. Open yourself to new foods and new ideas. What feels unfamiliar at first may become the most rewarding change you ever make.

He believes that lowering defenses and trusting a science-based approach opened an entirely new world for him, one where health feels attainable instead of fragile.
