  • How Rhonda Lowered Her A1C from 10.9% to 5.5% and Lost 41 Pounds with Type 2 Diabetes

Meet Rhonda. When she went to the doctor in January, her A1c had reached 10.9%.
She knew immediately that something needed to change.

Rhonda had lived with prediabetes before developing type 2 diabetes, and this wasn't her first experience with whole-food, plant-based nutrition. Years earlier, she had successfully improved her prediabetes by changing the way she ate. But over time, she fell away from those habits.

The last few years had been particularly difficult. Rhonda was caring for her mother while navigating significant stress, and taking care of her own health became harder. Eventually, her diabetes became increasingly difficult to manage.
When she saw an A1C of 10.9%, Rhonda made a deal with her doctor. If she couldn't improve her numbers by her next visit, she would consider medication, something she had strongly resisted.

That result gave her the urgency to act.

Rhonda joined the Mastering Diabetes Coaching Program and began making changes immediately. By June 30, her A1c had fallen from 10.9% to 5.5%. She had also lost 41 pounds, dramatically improved her energy and stamina, and become physically stronger.

For Rhonda, the experience reinforced a lesson she now wants others to hear before their health reaches the point hers did: Don't wait.

Returning to Whole-Food, Plant-Based Nutrition

Rhonda wasn't unfamiliar with the philosophy behind the Mastering Diabetes Method.

She had tried to follow a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle since her children were young, although her consistency had varied over the years. She had even purchased the Mastering Diabetes book long before joining the program.

She never really got through it.

The research-heavy material didn't immediately connect with her, but she continued encountering Mastering Diabetes through videos online. Eventually, she decided to request more information.

At that point, cost wasn't her primary concern.

“I've got to do something for my health.”

Rhonda signed up to the Mastering Diabetes Coaching Program and quickly discovered that it aligned closely with many of the beliefs about nutrition she already held. But it also introduced an important distinction she had previously missed.

Learning That “Healthy Fats” Could Still Matter

In her previous attempts at whole-food, plant-based eating, Rhonda still included larger amounts of foods she considered healthy sources of fat.

Mastering Diabetes helped her understand the relationship between dietary fat and insulin resistance differently.

Rather than eliminating all sources of fat, Rhonda significantly reduced the amount she was eating, including many of the higher-fat plant foods she had previously consumed more freely.

That adjustment became an important part of her new approach.

Rhonda noticed changes quickly.

Her weight began dropping in a way she hadn't experienced during her previous attempts at plant-based eating. Her blood sugar improved, and the combination of results gave her motivation to continue.

Eventually, she lost approximately 41 pounds.

Rhonda before and after transformation with Mastering Diabetes

Rhonda's A1c dropped 5.4 percentage points, reaching 5.5% by June 30.

At the time of her interview, she was already looking forward to her next test because she wanted to see whether it had improved further.

But the changes weren't limited to laboratory results. Rhonda could feel the difference in her everyday life.

“I feel alive.”

Walking After Meals Made Her Stronger

Movement became another important part of Rhonda's routine.

Mastering Diabetes recommends walking for approximately 10 to 15 minutes after meals, and Rhonda decided to put that advice into practice.

Because she typically eats two meals per day, she walks for about 15 minutes after each one. Over time, she began noticing something beyond the effect movement could have on her blood sugar.

Her legs were getting stronger.

One day, the difference suddenly stood out to her. Activities felt easier, and she realized how much stronger her legs had become compared with when she started.

Her stamina improved too.

She could walk farther and work longer. The exhaustion and sense that something was seriously wrong with her health began giving way to energy.

For Rhonda, these changes made her progress feel tangible even when she wasn't looking at an A1c result.

Eating More Fruit Than She Expected

Rhonda has always loved eating, so she appreciated discovering that improving her metabolic health didn't have to mean tiny portions or constantly feeling restricted.

“I love being able to eat all I want.”

The amount of fruit particularly surprised her.

She found herself eating approximately a quart of fruit in the morning, something she hadn't expected from an approach designed to help her improve her blood sugar.

Instead of fearing carbohydrate-rich whole foods, Rhonda learned to build her meals around fruits, vegetables, and other low-fat whole plant foods while paying closer attention to dietary fat.

She also enjoyed exploring the Mastering Diabetes recipes.

One became a clear favorite: the Balsamic Berry Arugula Salad. Rhonda says she could eat it every day.

Those experiences helped make the lifestyle sustainable. She wasn't forcing herself through meals she disliked simply because she wanted a better A1c. She genuinely enjoyed eating this way.

From Feeling Miserable to Feeling Alive

When Rhonda thinks back to how she felt before joining Mastering Diabetes, the difference is striking.

She remembers feeling miserable.

Her health seemed so poor that she knew something had to change. The A1c of 10.9% confirmed what her body was already telling her.

Today, Rhonda describes an entirely different experience.

Her energy is considerably better. She has more stamina. She can walk farther and work longer. Her legs feel stronger, and she has been surprised by how low her blood pressure has become while still feeling good.

Combined with losing 41 pounds and lowering her A1c to 5.5%, those changes have transformed the way she feels about her health.

Rather than wondering how much worse things might become, Rhonda is now curious about how much further she can progress.

Why Rhonda Says Not to Wait

Rhonda's strongest advice comes directly from her own experience.

“Don't wait. Get it done. Do something now.”

She had previously improved her health when she was living with prediabetes, but she eventually got off track. Years of stress and inconsistent habits followed, and by the time she decided she needed to take decisive action again, her A1c had reached 10.9%.

She doesn't want other people to wait for a number like that.

If someone is already seeing signs of prediabetes or rising blood sugar, Rhonda believes that's the time to take the situation seriously and begin making changes.

She also understands why the financial investment in coaching can make someone hesitate. She had those considerations herself when she first reached out.

Her perspective changed once she considered what she was investing in.

“How much is your health worth?”

For Rhonda, the answer is clear. She would make the investment again.

Her A1c has fallen from 10.9% to 5.5%. She has lost 41 pounds, built stronger legs, increased her stamina, improved her energy, and found a way of eating that she genuinely enjoys.

Most importantly, she feels like herself again.

“I'm so thankful for Mastering Diabetes. I really feel like they saved my life.”
