A Love Greater than Diabetes: How Elizabeth Helped Her Son Thrive with Type 1 Diabetes

Childhood, Altered

No parent wants to go through the experience of seeing their child suffer. Getting a type 1 diabetes diagnosis for a young child can be especially heartbreaking for a parent, especially because it means a lifetime of health challenges.

Elizabeth went through this experience when her son, Jackson, was 4 years old. She and her husband walked out of the hospital feeling scared and confused – but determined to give their son the best opportunity to thrive.

Inspiration Sets In

Elizabeth went on a mission to understand what the body is experiencing in diabetes and how to help her own child. She started searching for information to guide her, and along the way she found the Mastering Diabetes book. By the time she finished reading it (listening on Audible), she knew it was the approach she wanted to take.

A 3-Day Transformation

Elizabeth joined the coaching program as soon as she could. Her coach suggested making a slow transition into the methodology, making changes one meal at a time. However, Elizabeth was fired up to go all-in right from the start. Very quickly, Jackson’s insulin sensitivity went through the roof. His blood sugar kept going low and they had to keep reducing the insulin dosages, dramatically. In just 3 days of making the shift to using the Mastering Diabetes Method, Jackson’s insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio went from 1:15 to 1:45-1:55.

Over the next few months, her family stayed consistent in their commitment to this method. There was a learning curve, and they felt out of place at times living in an agriculture-heavy midwest town, but ultimately they found their way. Elizabeth found new recipes, learned new skills, and built new routines with her family – and the hard work paid off. At his next doctor visit, Jackson’s A1c went from 7.8 down to 5.3.

It was incredibly rewarding for Elizabeth as a parent, and Jackson is proud too. Years later, he really understands his body and is mindful of how different foods affect him.

Give It a Try

To anyone considering the Mastering Diabetes Method, Elizabeth wants you to know, “This is so worth it. It has been a game changer for our whole family. For Jackson, for me, and for my husband as well. We all feel so much better. I no longer have acid reflux or “regular” aches and pains. There are so many delicious foods that fit into this eating pattern; you just have to try out some recipes and see what you like.”

Paying It Forward

After going through the learning process on her own, Elizabeth felt inspired to support other families who are in the same situation she was in when they first received Jackson’s diagnosis. Rather than sitting in a hospital room going down the Google rabbit hole, she wanted parents to have a guide that walked them through the new lingo (What is an A1c? What is a C-peptide?) and educated them on not only how to support their child in nutrition changes (What’s the best diet to help my child control their blood sugar?), but also how to navigate the social settings of childhood (What do I do when my child goes to a birthday party?).

She partnered with physician Dr. Laurie Marbas to write a book to serve this very purpose, which is being published this month. The book is called A Love Greater than Diabetes and you can purchase it through your favorite source.
