  • How Curtis Lowered His Blood Sugar and Lost 4 Pounds in Days at the Mastering Diabetes Retreat

Meet Curtis. For much of his adult life, he had dealt with fluctuating high blood pressure. During his years in the military, he was told that when he sat down and relaxed, his numbers would usually settle back down.

But three years ago, something changed.

His doctor told him his numbers were moving beyond occasional hypertension and into diabetes and persistent high blood pressure. He wasn't taking insulin and didn't consider his diabetes severe, but Curtis was concerned about where his health could be heading if he didn't take action.

So he began doing what comes naturally to him. He started researching.

Curtis read books about diabetes, studied the science, attended nutrition classes, and eventually discovered Mastering Diabetes. Over time, he began applying what he learned through diet and exercise and saw encouraging results.

But there was one problem. The more he learned, the more questions he had.

Was he doing it correctly? When should he check his blood sugar? What should he expect after eating or exercising? How could he improve his results?

When an email announcing the Mastering Diabetes Retreat appeared while he was sitting at home reading another book about diabetes, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He signed up before the opportunity could pass him by.

Why Curtis Wanted Full Immersion

Curtis wasn't arriving at the retreat without knowledge. He had spent years learning.

What he wanted now was the opportunity to take everything he had read and turn it into something practical.

He describes the retreat as an opportunity for "full immersion," a place where he could ask questions as they occurred instead of trying to piece together the answers on his own.

Blood sugar monitoring became one example.

Before the retreat, Curtis typically checked his glucose in the morning and evening. During the retreat, he began learning how much more information he could gain by monitoring at different times throughout the day.

What happened after a meal? What happened after exercise? What numbers should he expect? When was he moving outside his desired range?

Instead of simply collecting readings, he was learning how to understand them.

Curtis's Retreat Results

The results would exceed his expectations.

Lost 4 Pounds

In only a few days, Curtis estimated that he had lost approximately four pounds based on his arrival and morning weigh-ins. Even more encouraging were his glucose readings, which reached what he described as "record territory." He saw readings below 100 mg/dL multiple times, including after a pool exercise session when he had not expected his glucose to fall that low.

Those numbers gave him immediate feedback, but the greater transformation was understanding what they meant. Rather than simply hoping his lifestyle was working, Curtis was learning how food, movement, and timing affected his body in real time.

Eating More and Feeling Fully Satisfied

Curtis also discovered something at the retreat that might sound surprising to anyone accustomed to traditional dieting: He was eating more.

When asked about the coaching staff, he jokingly complained that they made him eat too much. But there was an important reason behind the joke.

Despite eating abundant meals, Curtis felt fully satiated throughout the day while his blood sugar continued moving in the right direction.

Instead of focusing on restriction, the retreat gave him an opportunity to experience what eating whole, plant-based foods could look and feel like in practice.

Every meal became part of the education.

He wasn't simply being told what to eat when he returned home. He was experiencing the meals himself while simultaneously watching what happened to his blood sugar.

Learning Through Movement

Exercise provided another real-world learning opportunity.

Curtis had already incorporated diet and exercise into his efforts before arriving, but the retreat allowed him to connect movement directly with his glucose readings.

After exercising in the pool, for example, his blood sugar dropped below 100 mg/dL, a result he hadn't expected.

That experience prompted new questions about when glucose might drop, what his personal patterns looked like, and how he should respond as he continued improving his metabolic health.

The retreat also introduced him to additional resources for weightlifting and strength training, giving him new ideas to explore after returning home.

For someone who had spent years studying diabetes independently, this was exactly what he had been looking for: the opportunity to connect information with experience.

Practical Strategies for Life After the Retreat

Curtis wasn't interested in succeeding for a few days in a controlled environment. He wanted to know how to make the lifestyle work when he went home. That meant asking practical questions.

What should he eat when traveling? What snacks could he keep available? How should he approach strength training? What tools and resources could help him continue learning?

One session on travel gave him so many useful ideas that shortly before his interview, Curtis was already researching some of the recommended snacks online so he could remember them and have them available later.

Those details mattered because his goal wasn't simply to leave the retreat with better numbers. It was to leave knowing what to do next.

Building Toward a Bigger Goal

Curtis came to the retreat with diabetes and high blood pressure, but his long-term goals extend well beyond improving a single glucose reading.

He wants to reach a healthy weight. He wants his blood pressure under control. He wants his diabetes under control.

And, working together with his physician, he hopes to reduce his reliance on the multiple medications he currently takes for diabetes and other health conditions.

The retreat didn't represent the end of that journey. It gave him momentum for what comes next.

After seeing his glucose reach new lows, losing approximately four pounds in just a few days, and gaining a clearer understanding of how to monitor and respond to his body, Curtis believes he is well on his way.

What Curtis Wants Other Parents to Know

For anyone considering attending the retreat, Curtis has practical advice.

Do your homework. Read beforehand. Come with questions. Know what you want to learn.

The better prepared you are, he believes, the more you'll be able to take advantage of having coaches, educators, and other participants around you for several days.

In a world where nutrition and diabetes information can often feel confusing or contradictory, Curtis especially values having access to what he describes as a fact-based source of information supported by real results.

His recommendation for anyone who has the opportunity to attend is simple: take advantage of it.
