Diagnosed and Confused

Chris worked at a company that facilitated annual biometric testing for its employees. For three years in a row, his fasting blood glucose was high and steadily increasing. They recommended that he go to a doctor to have further testing done.

When he went to the appointment, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

At the time, Chris was confused and frustrated, with a side of denial. He had just turned 40 and he was exercising most days. The same year, his mother also got a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, but she was much older and was inactive. It didn’t seem possible for him to have the same disease.

Inspiration Sets In

Elizabeth went on a mission to understand what the body is experiencing in diabetes and how to help her own child. She started searching for information to guide her, and along the way she found the Mastering Diabetes book. By the time she finished reading it (listening on Audible), she knew it was the approach she wanted to take.

Searching for Patterns in the Chaos

For the next 5 years, Chris was in a perpetual game of figuring out what to eat and how his body would respond. No matter what strategies he tried, it seemed like nothing was ever a reliable method for producing the results he was looking for. Despite eating healthy and exercising regularly, he continued to struggle with managing his blood sugar.

Chris tried multiple forms of a low-carb diet, including a keto diet. In every case, his body didn’t respond well, and neither did his mind. He didn’t enjoy the food, and it wasn’t giving him consistent results anyways.

Making matters worse, his doctor continued to add more prescriptions and increase the dosages. It felt like a cycle from which he’d never be able to break free.

The Answers He Needed

Because he was frustrated with his diet and the disappointing outcomes, Chris was frequently searching for new information that might give him the key to finally get control of his health. At some point along the way, he found the Mastering Diabetes program.

He found the podcast and went back to the beginning (all the way back to episode 1!) and listened to as many episodes as he could. Through doing this, it became clear to him that he wanted to give this method a try. He began to steadily make changes to his diet, and was starting to see positive results. For the first time in a long time, he saw light at the end of the tunnel.

One day, he heard Robby talking about an experience that a growing number of people with diabetes have – and he felt very seen. As he heard the description of someone who is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and struggling to manage it despite being at a healthy weight, eating well, and exercising regularly, he thought to himself, “This is definitely me.” He immediately called his doctor to ask for a C-peptide test.

The results came in with a score of 0.8 – making it clear that Chris had been misdiagnosed for over a decade. Rather than type 2 diabetes, Chris had a slow-developing form of type 1 diabetes, called Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), or type 1.5 diabetes.

The relief that he felt was immense. Finally, things made sense.

LADA… Now what?

The biggest mystery had been solved. Chris understood what was happening inside of his body. He was taken off all of his oral medications and put on insulin.

Now, it was time to learn how to optimize his health. He had already started making dietary changes and transitioning towards the Mastering Diabetes Method, but he was ready to take it even more seriously.

Chris joined the coaching program so that he could have guidance as he was learning how to support his body in gaining insulin sensitivity. This was really helpful for him to be able to talk through his personal situation and learn how to apply the method to his unique food preferences, body, and lifestyle.

Let Yourself Love Carbs

Chris found that eating according to the Mastering Diabetes Method guidelines was easier than he expected. He was happy to bring his favorite high carbohydrates foods back into his diet. He said he was happy to cut out meat in exchange for being able to eat rice and fruit again.

These days, Chris feels really dialed in with both the input and the output of the equation. On the side of input, he is totally satisfied with eating this way. He doesn’t crave other foods that he used to eat or wish that he didn’t have to avoid them. The results he’s experienced make everything worth it.

On the output side of the equation, Chris is confident in his blood sugar management for the first time since being diagnosed. He understands how his body works together with his lifestyle, and it is very rare for him to have a high or low blood sugar reading and not know why it occurred. It is a total gamechanger to know why and how his body responds to his actions and to be able to plan ahead based on that information.

And the numbers don’t lie! Before Chris found Mastering Diabetes, his A1c was 7.6 and had consistently been in the high 7s or low 8s for years.

After adopting the Mastering Diabetes method, Chris’ A1c has consistently sat between 4.9 to 5.4 for the past 6 years.

It’s Work But It’s Worth It

Chris’ tough love advice for you? Big results take effort.

However, you don’t need to bite off more than you can chew. Go ahead and take baby steps, at a pace that works for you. Give yourself time to learn and adjust.

Life is too short and too fragile to not take care of your health. Nobody on their deathbed would wish that they had eaten more junk food – but they certainly would wish that they had more time. This lifestyle gives you more time.

“This is adding years to my life, and life to my years,” Chris says.
