In Denial & Flying Blind

Before finding the Mastering Diabetes Method, Kimberly had been flying blind for many years. When she was originally diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, her doctor prescribed her Byetta to help with blood sugar control. However, her family history of pancreatic cancer made her wary of taking it (based on the information that came with the medication), so she asked for an alternate solution. She was then prescribed Metformin (1000mg/day) and Glipizide (10mg/day).

At the time, Kim was in denial of how serious the issue was, and how mindful she needed to be in order to take care of herself. She figured, “I’ll just choose chicken, bake instead of fry, et cetera.” But she struggled to make healthy food choices, and she eventually stopped taking her medications because they were causing unwanted side effects such as loose stool and gut discomfort. She stopped going to her doctors appointments too.

Kim was overwhelmed, and avoidance was her coping mechanism. She thought that if she acted like she didn’t have diabetes, then maybe she could escape it.

Reality Catches Up

Of course, diabetes doesn’t work like that. Over time, Kim’s health worsened and the list of issues started piling up. She had very low energy and was tired all the time. Her hair started falling out. She had brain fog. She was getting headaches and felt pain in her eyes. She gained weight, and at her highest she weighed 230 pounds.

As you probably understand, when your physical health is struggling, your mental health often is too. Kim felt awful about herself. She had low self-esteem and was feeling miserable. When she looked at her body and her life, she wasn’t proud of what was happening.

Her mom also has type 2 diabetes, and her brother had passed away from complications of type 1 diabetes at age 35. When her mom saw how bad things had gotten for Kim, she told her, “I’m not buying another child. Go to the doctor.”

Kim knew it was time. She booked an appointment and went in for a check-up. When she did, her A1c was measured at 11.3. She knew she had to start taking her health seriously – if not for herself, then for her mother and her own family, especially her children.

Answered Prayers

Kim started praying for guidance and support to restore her health. She started doing her own research looking for resources on diabetes, and eventually found the Mastering Diabetes Method. She read and watched the testimonials, and felt inspired by what she saw. She figured that things could only get better from where she was at the time, and she may as well give it a try and see what difference this method might make for her.

She didn’t waste any time getting started. She went through her kitchen and got rid of everything that wasn’t on the green light list. She did her best and learned as she went. In time, she figured out how different foods affected her body, and found a system that works for her.

There were trials and errors along the way. For instance, at first, Kim thought that anything labeled as “vegan” would provide a good blood glucose response, but she soon learned that wasn’t the case. Through her own self-experimentation, she landed on the same knowledge that the Mastering Diabetes founders did – that all 3 components of the dietary portion of the Mastering Diabetes Method are important: low-fat, plant-based, and whole foods.

She realized that she needed to fully commit if she wanted to achieve the results she was seeking. She drew a line for herself between what she can and cannot have if she wants to be healthy. She made health her priority, and the rest of her decisions stem from there. As you’ll find out, this method works, so Kim’s effort paid off exactly as she’d hoped it would.

It Gets Easier, and It Gets Better

Today, Kim has so much energy that she says she doesn’t get tired and has to remind herself to go to bed at night. She says that she has more energy at 49 than she did when she was much younger. She’s lost 17 pounds (without exercising) and has gone from a size 18-20 to a size 12 in clothing. She is thinking clearly and no longer experiences brain fog, and her headaches and eye pain have cleared up too. At her most recent doctor’s appointment, her A1c was down to 6.8.

The best part is that it’s become second nature for her now. Kim’s son still eats other foods, but she knows that what she cooks for him is not for her – and thankfully, that takes little effort for her to execute these days because she no longer craves the foods that she used to!

In the past, she’d been known for loving sweets and snacking constantly (her nickname at work was “Munch”). Now, Kim says that fruit takes care of her sweet tooth, and she snacks on healthy foods. Her coworkers have been inspired by her lifestyle changes and they celebrated her lowered weight and diabetes numbers alongside her.

Kim used to think that eating a plant-based diet meant eating mostly salads. Now, she has learned just how versatile and fun it can be. She’s found lots of new foods that she loves, including multiple varieties of sweet potatoes and squashes. Spaghetti squash is a personal favorite!
