How Ovi and Fe Lowered Their A1C Together and Reversed Diabetes and Prediabetes

Meet Ovi and Fe. After decades working in healthcare, they believed they were making healthy choices.

They had gradually improved their diet over the years, first becoming mostly vegetarian, then eliminating fish due to concerns about mercury exposure, and eventually transitioning to a fully vegan lifestyle. Yet despite all of those changes, their blood sugar numbers remained stubbornly elevated.

Ovi's A1c consistently measured between 7.2% and 7.3%, placing him in the type 2 diabetes range. Fe's A1c hovered around 6.2%, putting her in the prediabetes range.

Neither of them believed those numbers had to define their future.

Looking for Answers Beyond "Managing" Diabetes

Ovi and Fe have been married for nearly 48 years and both retired from long careers in healthcare in 2020. Ovi worked as a physician assistant, while Fe spent her career as a nurse anesthetist.

Given their medical backgrounds, they were already familiar with nutrition and chronic disease. They expected their years of healthy eating to be reflected in their lab work.

Instead, year after year, their A1c levels barely changed.

During one annual checkup, Fe asked her physician a simple question: "Can I lower my A1c from 6.2% to a normal range?"

The response wasn't encouraging.

Her physician suggested there were "many factors" involved, leaving her with the impression that significant improvement was unlikely. Ovi received a similar message. His doctor was pleased he was "controlling" his diabetes through diet but offered little hope that it could actually improve.

They realized that if they wanted a different outcome, they would have to search for it themselves.

Discovering Mastering Diabetes

Everything changed after attending a free Mastering Diabetes webinar.

For the first time, they heard a clear explanation of insulin resistance and why their blood sugar remained elevated despite years of good intentions.

The science resonated immediately.

After speaking with the Mastering Diabetes team, they enrolled in Coaching and committed to following the program.

Fe took charge of meal planning, carefully following the 6-Week Insulin Sensitizing Meal Plan, while Ovi happily enjoyed whatever she prepared.

Along the way, they discovered something surprising.

Although they had been vegan for years, their diet still contained more fat than they realized. Foods like cooking oils, corn chips, crackers, peanuts, and cashews had quietly become everyday staples.

They made simple but meaningful adjustments.

Fe replaced oil with broth and water for cooking. Ovi stopped grazing on nuts throughout the day. Together, they also adopted a new habit of walking or using the elliptical after meals to help improve glucose uptake.

Their Results

After just 90 days, both Ovi and Fe experienced meaningful improvements.

In addition to lowering his A1c into the non-diabetic range, Ovi also improved his lipid profile, helping address concerns about elevated triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol.

For both of them, the most meaningful result wasn't just the numbers. It was realizing that meaningful improvement was possible.

What Made the Difference?

Looking back, Ovi and Fe credit their success to consistency.

The program helped them identify hidden sources of dietary fat that were interfering with insulin sensitivity and replace them with meals centered around fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.

They also found that eating larger, satisfying meals reduced the urge to snack throughout the day, making the lifestyle feel sustainable rather than restrictive.

Just as importantly, Coaching provided accountability, education, and structure. Their coach frequently reminded them that lasting results come from consistency, not perfection, a message that helped them stay focused even when progress wasn't linear.

What They Want Others to Know

One of the biggest advantages Ovi and Fe experienced was making the journey together.

Having a partner created accountability, encouragement, and motivation during the inevitable challenges that come with changing long-standing habits.

Their advice is simple: Yes, it can be done. The program works if you're willing to commit to it.

As they often tell others, "Have a spouse, friend, or partner join you on the journey. Teamwork creates better results and stronger motivation. We're living proof of that."

Today, they have the knowledge, tools, and confidence to continue improving their health through lifestyle medicine. More importantly, they no longer see diabetes and prediabetes as conditions that simply have to be managed.

They know that meaningful change is possible.
