How Rory Reversed Prediabetes and Lowered His A1c in Just 3 Months

Meet Rory. He wasn't waiting for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis to start taking his health seriously.

For years, his medical exams had shown him moving closer and closer to diabetes. His father had lived with diabetes and taken Metformin, so Rory had already seen what the condition could look like over time.

He wanted to change course before his own health reached that point.

The frustrating part was that Rory was already extremely active. As a former physical education teacher, exercise and discipline weren't the problem. He worked out every day. Yet his fasting glucose continued rising, his blood pressure increased, he developed fatty liver, and he began feeling sluggish.

He experimented with different eating patterns, including keto and carnivore, but his metabolic health continued moving in the wrong direction.

Then Rory discovered Mastering Diabetes and learned about the relationship between dietary fat, insulin resistance, and fat accumulation in muscle and liver tissue. The explanation finally made sense to him.

Within three months of applying the Mastering Diabetes Method, Rory lowered his A1c from 6.0% to 5.6%. His fasting glucose, which had regularly climbed above 100 mg/dL, began reaching the low 90s and occasionally the 80s when he consistently followed the program. He also stopped taking the blood pressure medication amlodipine that had been prescribed by his cardiologist.

For Rory, the results provided something he had been searching for through years of conflicting advice: evidence that he was finally moving in the right direction.

Watching His Numbers Creep Higher

Rory had known for years that something was changing.

About a decade earlier, he began noticing skin tags under his arms. He responded by cutting out desserts, and the skin tags quickly disappeared, but his metabolic health continued to concern him.

After retiring approximately nine years ago, Rory watched his fasting glucose gradually rise.

He tried changing the way he ate. He researched different approaches and listened to doctors, scientists, and researchers online. But the more information he encountered, the more contradictory it seemed.

Keto didn't solve the problem. Carnivore didn't solve it.

Meanwhile, his fasting glucose was rising, his blood pressure was increasing, and he had developed fatty liver.

When Rory sought answers about the fatty liver, he felt he received very little practical guidance about what he could actually do.

He described himself as feeling like a ship drifting at sea. He was trying to help himself. He just didn't know which direction to follow.

The Missing Piece Wasn't Exercise

For many people trying to improve their metabolic health, becoming more physically active can represent a major lifestyle change.

That wasn't Rory's problem. “I was a former gym teacher. I work out every day. Fitness is not an issue for me.” Food was different.

Rory ate a lot, including plenty of foods he genuinely believed were healthy. Looking back, he realized that some of those choices weren't supporting his own metabolic health the way he had assumed.

Eventually, Rory came across the Mastering Diabetes Book.

One section in particular caught his attention. He learned about the relationship between fat stored in muscle and liver tissue and insulin resistance.

Rory already suspected that insulin resistance was at the center of what was happening to him.

Now he had an explanation that seemed both practical and consistent with what he was experiencing.

He began watching more Mastering Diabetes videos and eventually joined the Mastering Diabetes Coaching Program.

Rory isn't claiming perfection. In fact, he readily acknowledges that he doesn't follow the Mastering Diabetes Method 100% of the time.

What convinced him was the pattern he could see in his own records.

When he consistently reduced dietary fat and followed the program, his fasting glucose moved into the 90s and sometimes the 80s. When social events or other circumstances pulled him away from those habits, he could see the difference.

His log became his evidence: “The proof's in the pudding.”

Learning to Enjoy a Different Way of Eating

The transition wasn't instantaneous.

Rory was making these dietary changes largely by himself because his wife wasn't particularly interested in following the same lifestyle. That meant learning how to prepare meals for himself without simply eating the same thing for several days in a row.

He began incorporating greens and sprouts into every meal and even started growing his own sprouts.

Beans and lentils became regular foods.

At first, the new routine required conscious effort. But as the months passed, Rory noticed something interesting.

The foods started tasting better.

Beans and lentils became more enjoyable. Greens and sprouts became normal parts of his meals. The lifestyle gradually stopped feeling like something he was temporarily doing to improve a laboratory result and started becoming part of his routine.

And when Rory stayed consistent, he could watch his glucose respond. That feedback made it easier to keep going.

From Sluggish to Feeling Better in His Body

Weight loss wasn't Rory's primary goal. He wanted his body to be healthier.

Before making these changes, he had begun feeling sluggish. Even bending down to tie his shoes was becoming uncomfortable as he developed more abdominal weight.

That didn't make sense to someone who exercised every day. Rory wanted his metabolic health to reflect the effort he was already putting into fitness.

As his eating habits changed and his glucose numbers improved, he began feeling better.

His A1c dropped from 6.0% to 5.6% within three months. His fasting readings could reach the low 90s and even the 80s when he was consistently following the program.

He was also no longer taking amlodipine, the blood pressure medication his cardiologist had prescribed.

For Rory, those changes reinforced an important realization: exercise had always been one of his strengths, but exercise alone had not been enough.

Nutrition was the piece he had been missing.

Coaching Added Accountability to the Education

Rory had already begun implementing some Mastering Diabetes principles before officially joining Coaching and was seeing encouraging results.

Coaching added structure.

Every week, he had access to a coach and could see other people going through similar experiences. He particularly valued accountability and believes having an accountability partner can be extremely useful for someone struggling with consistency.

He also strongly recommends keeping a log.

Recording his glucose allowed Rory to see the relationship between his behavior and his results instead of relying on memory or guessing whether something was working.

When he followed the Mastering Diabetes Method closely, the numbers reflected it. When he didn't, he could see that too.

That made his progress something he could evaluate for himself.

Changing Course Before Type 2 Diabetes

Rory's story isn't about reversing a type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

He was diagnosed with prediabetes and could see his numbers gradually moving toward diabetes. With his family history and his own rising fasting glucose, blood pressure concerns, and fatty liver, he didn't want to wait until the situation became more serious before changing course.

He wanted, as he puts it, to know where the parachute was before the plane was going down.

Mastering Diabetes gave him the direction he had been searching for.

His A1c fell from 6.0% to 5.6% in three months. His fasting glucose began reaching the low 90s and occasionally the 80s when he consistently followed the Method. He stopped taking his prescribed amlodipine, and he feels healthier and better.

Rory still has days when he doesn't follow the program perfectly. That's not enough to discourage him.

He has seen what happens when he consistently applies the principles, and the overall trend is what matters to him.

After years of experimenting with different diets and sorting through contradictory information, Rory finally feels like the ship is heading in the right direction.
