How Ben Lowered His A1C from 7.1 to 5.9 and Lost 24 Pounds in Less Than 3 Months

Meet Ben Welch. When he received his diabetes diagnosis, he was devastated.

The news came unexpectedly during what should have been a routine follow-up procedure. After dealing with complications from an infected toe that eventually required a partial amputation, Ben was preparing for outpatient surgery when a nurse checked his fasting blood glucose.

The number was elevated. That surprised him.

Ben had spent years working in emergency medical services and occasionally checked his own blood sugar. It had always been normal. His previous lab work had never raised concerns about diabetes.

But after the surgery, he followed up with his primary care physician. The results were undeniable.

His A1c came back at 7.1, placing him firmly in the type 2 diabetes range. For Ben, the diagnosis felt crushing.

Feeling Like He Had Lost Himself

The diagnosis represented far more than a number on a lab report.

Over the previous five to seven years, Ben had been struggling physically. Chronic back pain. Foot and ankle pain. Weight gain. Fatigue. Loss of mobility. Activities he once loved no longer felt easy.

An avid outdoorsman for most of his life, he found himself becoming less active and increasingly disconnected from the person he used to be.

By the time he was diagnosed, he was at his heaviest weight and felt sluggish almost every day. More than anything, he felt lost.

He knew something wasn't right, but despite multiple attempts to get back on track, nothing seemed to stick.

"I knew this wasn't my true self," he explained.

Searching for a Different Path

Ben was already familiar with Mastering Diabetes before his diagnosis.

Years earlier, he had experimented briefly with a plant-based lifestyle. More recently, his daughter's health journey had brought him back to thinking seriously about nutrition.

His daughter had been vegetarian since age six because she did not want to harm animals. Later, she was diagnosed with celiac disease, which forced the entire family to become much more intentional about food choices.

As Ben researched plant-based nutrition, he frequently came across Mastering Diabetes videos online.

After receiving his diagnosis, those videos suddenly felt much more relevant. He began exploring the program seriously and eventually decided to go all in.

Choosing Hope Over Fear

Like many people who join the program, Ben admits he was skeptical.

He had tried different diets. Different exercise routines. Different attempts at weight loss. Nothing had created lasting success. But something felt different this time.

Instead of focusing on restriction, the program focused on improving insulin sensitivity and addressing the root cause of elevated blood sugar.

For the first time, he allowed himself to believe something he hadn't considered before. Maybe this was reversible. Maybe diabetes didn't have to define the rest of his life.

That shift in mindset became the beginning of everything.

Seeing Results Within the First Two Weeks

The changes started almost immediately.

Less than two weeks into the program, Ben began monitoring his blood sugar more closely and noticed something remarkable.

His numbers were dropping. Day after day, his glucose readings improved.

For the first time since his diagnosis, he felt confident that he was moving in the right direction.

The improvements weren't just showing up on his glucose meter. He felt different: Lighter. Cleaner. More energetic. More optimistic.

The early results gave him momentum, and momentum quickly turned into consistency.

Ben’s Before and After Results

In less than two and a half months, Ben achieved dramatic improvements in both his blood sugar and overall health.

His A1c dropped from 7.1 to 5.9 in less than three months. At the same time, he lost 24 pounds, dropping from 269 pounds to 245 pounds.

For someone who had spent years struggling with his health, these numbers felt life-changing.

Discovering Energy He Hadn't Felt in Years

One of the biggest surprises for Ben was how quickly his energy returned.

Before the program, simply getting through the day often felt difficult. The extra weight, physical pain, and blood sugar challenges had taken a significant toll on his quality of life.

As his insulin sensitivity improved, so did his physical capacity. He began feeling lighter on his feet. His focus improved. His energy became more consistent throughout the day.

And then something happened that he never expected: He started running again.

From Barely Active to Considering a Marathon

Not long before his diagnosis, running wasn't even on Ben's radar.

The combination of weight gain, pain, and fatigue made it feel unrealistic. But as the pounds came off and his energy increased, he began jogging. Then running. Then running regularly.

Eventually, a thought crossed his mind that would have seemed impossible just a few months earlier: Could he run a marathon?

At 46 years old, it was a goal he had never seriously considered. Now, it suddenly felt possible. That realization became one of the clearest signs that his life was changing.

Why Coaching Made All the Difference

While Ben credits the nutritional approach for transforming his health, he is equally quick to credit the coaching.

For him, accountability was everything. He knew that without regular check-ins, it would have been easier to drift back into old habits.

Instead, he stayed connected daily and weekly with his coach. The relationship quickly became much more than a series of nutrition discussions.

It became a source of encouragement, accountability, and human connection.

Ben openly shares that there were moments when he could have taken shortcuts or made excuses. But knowing someone was there to support him kept him moving forward.

That consistency became one of the most important factors in his success.

More Than a Physical Transformation

What makes Ben's story especially powerful is that it goes beyond blood sugar and weight loss.

He speaks openly about the emotional challenges he faced during the years leading up to his diagnosis. The physical struggles affected his confidence. His relationships. His sense of identity.

Like many people, he found himself trying to reconcile past disappointments, stress, and life challenges while simultaneously trying to improve his health.

What he discovered through the process was something simple but profound: Hope. Not blind optimism. Not perfection. Just the belief that positive change was still possible. And that belief changed everything.

What Ben Wants Others to Know

Ben's message is simple: Start.

You don't need to have everything figured out. You don't need to be perfect. You don't need to change your entire life overnight. Just start.

One minute at a time. One meal at a time. One choice at a time.

He believes that when people commit to the process, ask questions, and stay connected to support, incredible things can happen.

His own transformation is proof of that.
