Diabetes Snuck Up On Him

When Greg was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, he was shocked. He didn’t think of himself as someone who would get diabetes. He had been a track and cross country runner in college and had been slim for most of his life. In his early 50s he stopped running regularly and started gaining weight, but the health decline had snuck up on him.

At first, he wondered, “Why me?” and “How could this happen?” – but eventually he got into the mindset of having to deal with the reality of the situation. He knew that he would do everything he could to not have to take insulin, so he started doing research on how to cure type 2 diabetes naturally.

Just What He Was Looking For

Along the way, Greg came across the Rich Roll podcast episode with Robby and cofounder Cyrus Khambatta. Having decades of experience as a judge, Greg prides himself on having a strong meter for credibility – and after listening to the episode, he knew that Robby was well-versed in the science and sincere in his intentions, and that the Mastering Diabetes Method was legitimate. He immediately sought out the website and YouTube channel and started consuming more Mastering Diabetes content.

Eventually, he found out that there was a coaching program. He knew right away that he wanted to give it a try. He decided to utilize the private coaching option and got connected with coach Marc.

Getting a Coach Was The Game Changer

Once Greg had that coaching support, everything started getting better. His fasting blood sugar came down, he lost weight, and he had so much more energy than before. He started taking amla as well and his numbers came down even more. After 3 months, he’d lost 32 pounds, his blood sugar was steady and predictable, and he felt like he got his life back again – so he signed up for 3 more months of work together.

Greg’s coach not only helped him to understand the nutritional logistics of the Mastering Diabetes Method, but also gave him support in navigating the social side of things. It was difficult at first to spend time with people and in places where he would be tempted to fall back into his old, unhealthy habits. His friends and family were often still partaking in those behaviors such as eating chorizo and drinking alcohol, and they would try to encourage him to join them. Coach Marc was able to provide him with tips and support to get through the initial social challenges as everyone was adjusting to Greg’s new lifestyle.

It’s Worth It

Before his diabetes diagnosis, Greg used to say, “If I die eating these foods that I love and are part of my Mexican culture, then so be it.” But since then, he’s changed his mind. He’s found that it feels good to eat in a way that supports your well-being. It’s worth it to have tons of energy, easily maintain a healthy weight, and have predictable blood sugar. By eating this way, he’s even more able to do everything else that he loves, such as spending time with his friends and family, playing golf, and going out for a jog.

Today, Greg is grateful that he was put into a position where he needed to learn about nutrition and health. In retrospect, he can see how valuable it has been to understand how food affects your body. Now, he feels equipped with the knowledge to control his diabetes health because he knows how to get the best results for his body – and what to do when he doesn’t make the ideal choice.

You Don’t Have To Be Perfect

Greg was not, and is not, “perfect” in his eating. He learned how to follow the Mastering Diabetes Method and eat from the Green Light Foods the majority of the time, but he allowed himself grace for the occasional red light food. He doesn’t stray often, but if he wants to eat a steak with his friends or have a drink, he knows now how that will affect his body and what to do to manage his diabetes in that case. This has given him the sense of freedom he needs to make the lifestyle sustainable for him.
