At 66, April Reversed Diabetes and Heart Disease in Just 3 Months

Meet April, from Asheville, North Carolina. She had a heart attack in June 2025, and the doctors gave her bad news. They said she would need insulin for the rest of her life and should eat lots of fat and very few carbs. But a few weeks later, April showed they were wrong.

After joining the Mastering Diabetes Coaching Program, April’s A1C dropped from 11.5 to a healthy range, and her blood sugar went from about 300 mg/dL to normal — all in just three months. Today, she’s off medication, feels stronger than ever, and is thankful for the program that helped her get her life back.

“I Had No Idea What I Was Doing”

After her heart attack, April was discharged from the hospital with a handful of medications and almost no guidance.

“They gave me insulin and pills, but no instructions. I had to watch YouTube videos just to learn how to give myself injections. I didn’t even know what low blood sugar felt like. One night, I got so sweaty and dizzy, and I had no idea what was happening.”

She was prescribed 30 units of insulin per day along with a diabetes drug, but the lack of education left her scared and confused.

“I prayed for help, and then I found Mastering Diabetes. I signed up right away, and within a month I was off all insulin and medication.”

A Complete Turnaround in 3 Months

At the hospital, April’s A1c was 11.5%. Three months after joining the Mastering Diabetes program, it dropped to 6.4%. Her continuous glucose monitor now shows an average of 89 mg/dL, which predicts her next A1C to be around 5.4%.“My doctors were stunned. They told me I’d be on insulin for life. Now, I’m completely off medication, and my cardiologist said, ‘You’ll never have another heart problem.’ I hope he’s right.”

Finding Strength, Support, and Clarity

April joined a Mastering Diabetes group coaching program, where she found not only answers but also encouragement.

“The group coaching was wonderful. Other people were improving, even people with type 1 diabetes. It gave me so much hope.”

Her coach guided her through every step, from adjusting her diet to handling emotional hurdles.

“One night, my insulin pen malfunctioned and I ended up in the ER. The next morning, my coach helped me process what happened. Having that kind of support meant everything.”

She learned to count fat, prioritize whole carbohydrates, and transition from a vegan diet high in oil to a truly low-fat, whole-food, plant-based lifestyle. Within weeks, she was seeing and feeling the difference.

“I’ve lost 30 pounds, I sleep better, my energy is incredible, and my heartburn is completely gone.”

“I Thought I Was Healthy — Until I Wasn’t”

Before the heart attack, April considered herself a healthy person. She was vegan, walked up and down her mountain five days a week, and had no obvious symptoms of diabetes.

“When they told me my A1C was 11.5%, I thought they had it wrong. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t feel sick. But that’s what scared me — how easily this could have gone unnoticed.”

Her experience has since become a spiritual awakening.

“There’s something right about eating this way. It feels like getting back to the way we were meant to eat. For me, it’s almost spiritual — reconnecting to creation itself.”

Healing Beyond Blood Sugar

Just a week after coming home from the hospital, April suddenly lost her vision.

“I couldn’t read, couldn’t work, couldn’t see clearly. The ophthalmologist said I had stripes in the back of my eyes, and they might not heal. A few weeks ago, I went back, and they were completely gone. My eyes healed. No damage. I believe it’s from this lifestyle.”

Her transformation extended beyond herself.

“My husband and son started eating this way, too. My son has lost 20 pounds, and we all feel better. It’s changed our whole family.”

A New Lease on Life

“Since leaving the hospital, I feel like I have a new lease on life. I had a cousin who died from type 2 diabetes because he didn’t know there was another way. I’m so grateful that I found Mastering Diabetes before it was too late. It saved my life — not just from diabetes, but from heart disease too.”

She now enjoys hiking, kayaking, writing, and inspiring others in her congregation and community to take control of their health.

“I’m doing better than I was even before all this happened. I feel alive again.”

“Crazy Is Not Doing Something”

April’s message for anyone newly diagnosed with diabetes is simple.

“I met someone who was just diagnosed and said, ‘I’m not doing anything crazy with my diet.’ I told them, ‘Crazy is not doing something.’ You don’t have to stay sick — you can learn how to heal. Mastering Diabetes makes that possible.”
