Lost and Alone on Diabetes Island

Tambi’s blood sugar was out of control. She never knew when she would go high or low, and she was tired of putting out fires as she rode out the blood sugar roller coaster. She felt like she was out on an island on her own, with no one who truly understood or could help her.

Then, she met Robby. On her first call with him, he told her information that she hadn’t received from her care team in the previous four years since her diagnosis. Robby understood her struggles in a way that her doctor hadn’t, and he provided guidance for her to get the answers she needed.

Rescued From The Island

After ordering the tests that Robby recommended, she discovered that she had been living with a misdiagnosis. Rather than type 2 diabetes, Tambi actually had type 1.5, a slow-progressing form of type 1 diabetes.

This meant that Tambi needed to take insulin because her pancreas was no longer capable of making enough. But that step alone doesn’t solve all the problems – as with any form of diabetes, it’s critical to improve your insulin sensitivity. Tambi joined the coaching program so that she could have the guidance and support to integrate the Mastering Diabetes Method into her life.

Let The Good Results Roll

Tambi took it seriously. She watched every video, read the blog posts, and attended the cooking classes. It all paid off – the results came quickly. Six months after that first call with Robby, Tambi’s A1c had dropped from 8.6 to 6.2. Her fasting blood sugar had dropped from an average of 200 to the low 80s. Her cholesterol dropped from 186 to 126, she lost 25 pounds, and lowered her blood pressure too. Today, her carbohydrate-to-insulin ratio is an amazing 45:1.

Consistency Is Underrated

Tambi says the best thing that’s come from it all is the consistency. “When I get up in the morning, I know how things are going to go. I know what my numbers are going to be, and how I’m going to feel.” She’s finally off the roller coaster, and off the island too.

The support of the Mastering Diabetes group coaching community was huge for her. She learned tips she wouldn’t have learned otherwise, such as how to pre-bolus for her meals, and the ideal intermittent fasting schedule.

Make It Delicious and Rewarding

It doesn’t hurt that the food tastes good, too. “I love the food! I’m just eating so much food and it’s fantastic. There’s so many different things to try.” Some of her favorite meals these days are big bowls of fruit for breakfast, split pea soup, and barley mushroom kale soup. She’s also learned how to make very quick and easy meals that are still healthy and diabetes-friendly for when life is moving fast. Plus, she’s been happily surprised to find that she no longer craves sugar, meat, or unhealthy food.

But it’s not always easy. “It’s a struggle sometimes, but you have to stay the course,” she says. You need to build strong habits and make it feel easy, satisfying, and rewarding for yourself so that you look forward to doing what is good for you.

The Mastering Diabetes Method is well worth the investment of time, effort, and finances. In the words of Tambi, “If you can’t invest in yourself, who are you going to invest in?”
