Have you struggled with losing too much weight? Or, are you at a healthy weight and have healthy lifestyle habits, but still have unmanageable blood glucose numbers despite this?
If so, you will relate to Owen’s story – and, you just might find the answers you are seeking.
An Uncommon (But Becoming More Common) Diabetes Story
Owen had been losing weight slowly but steadily for about two years. As he was getting more and more thin, his friends and family became more concerned and encouraged him to see a doctor. When he finally did, he discovered that his fasting blood glucose reading was 300 and his A1c was 14.3%.
He was told that he had type 2 diabetes. His doctor prescribed metformin and basal insulin, told him to eat a low-carb diet, then sent Owen on his way to adjust to life with his new diagnosis.
He didn’t adjust well. He hated the food, struggled with low energy, and even lost his near-sighted vision and was no longer able to see or read things up close. In addition, he was still struggling to maintain his weight, let alone gain back what he had lost.
Time For a New Approach
It was time to start doing his own research. In his search, Owen found a podcast episode where Rich Roll was interviewing Mastering Diabetes founders Robby and Cyrus. He was intrigued by what they shared, so he purchased the book and began reading.
Through what is shared in the book, Owen realized he likely had latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), also sometimes called type 1.5 diabetes. He asked his doctor to order some tests for him that the book recommended. Based on the results (C-peptide of 1.0 and tested positive for antibodies), he thought it was likely that he had LADA, but his doctor didn’t take his suggestions and inquiries seriously.
The Results Don’t Lie
His doctor was more focused on celebrating the positive results that Owen had achieved through following the Mastering Diabetes method. And to be fair, they were pretty impressive. In 3 months, Owen had dropped his A1c to 6.6%. Due to these results, his doctor took him off of insulin, and increased his metformin prescription to make up for it.
Eventually, Owen got his A1c down to 5.9%. On one hand, he was thrilled. On the other, he was still losing weight. He decided to work with the Mastering Diabetes Coaching Program to get some personalized support.
It was exactly what he needed. Having someone to talk to who understood his situation and had walked the same path herself was a game changer.
Owen’s coach encouraged him to get a new doctor, and he did. At the first visit, the new doctor took one look at his test results and told him that he had LADA and wrote him a prescription for insulin.
His coach also helped him to make adjustments to his diet so that he could gain weight while still supporting his body to have improved insulin sensitivity and better blood sugar management. Over the course of 6 weeks he gained 15 pounds, which had been impossible for the past 3 years.
For Owen, the Mastering Diabetes Method was much easier to do than the low-carb diet that had originally been recommended to him. He enjoys the meals more, restored his vision, and has much higher energy – so much energy, in fact, that he is waking up early for the first time in his life and has been exercising too. In addition, it has been much easier to share meals with his family on the Mastering Diabetes Method.

Owen has learned that keeping his daily fat intake low is the key to blood sugar management. His typical breakfast is a smoothie with as much as he can pack into the blender – including bananas, berries, greens, cinnamon, ginger, and amla. Lunch is usually a bowl of quinoa, rice, or noodles with vegetables, beans or tofu, and a good sauce to kick up the flavor. Dinner is similar and often includes a big salad to go with it.
“I Got My Life Back”
Owen feels like the Mastering Diabetes Method gave him his life back. Today, he has the knowledge to set himself up for success. He has built habits and systems that support his health. He knows it is all within his control – and that knowledge and trust is huge.
To anyone on the fence about giving this a try, Owen is here to give you the reminder that you need to do something. Nobody can heal you but yourself – so if you don’t do it, nothing will happen, nothing will change.

It all takes time. He recommends going slowly and phasing yourself into the method. Buy the book and just explore the ideas. If it resonates, start implementing it over time – and definitely get a coach, because that will fast-track your progress and results. The coaches help you tailor the guidelines and approach to fit your life and your needs, and guide you in making it sustainable.
You can do it! And it works!
