It’s Never Too Late To Change
They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but this story begs to differ. At age 72, Phillip has the best A1c he’s ever had. He lost 95 pounds. He lowered his cholesterol and triglycerides. And, he no longer takes any diabetes medications.
Before Mastering Diabetes
Philip was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in his late forties. He was also overweight, and his doctor emphasized that losing weight was the primary concern. He was told that if he lost weight, he would solve multiple issues at the same time, including his diabetes.
Philip did his best to manage his weight over the years. At one point, his daughter suggested that he try eating a plant-based diet. She was plant-based and she knew that the diet was helpful for weight loss as well as preventing and improving other health conditions.
He decided to give it a try. Soon after and with ease, he lost weight and lowered his blood pressure. However, despite his weight loss success, his blood sugar was still a challenge to keep in check.

Time To Commit
Philip decided to seek more support for his diabetes specifically. He eventually found Mastering Diabetes and read the book. At first, he just dabbled in the method we recommend. He started trying things out, but not in a committed way.
However, Philip knew that in order to truly experience the results he was seeking, he’d need to truly give it his full commitment. He decided to join the Mastering Diabetes small group coaching program to get the support he knew he needed in order to stay consistent – and it was exactly what he needed. The group accountability made a big difference.
After his 12-week program was complete, he signed up again. Although he had been plant-based for a while before joining, he still learned a lot from his coach and the other group participants. Being able to share the experience with others was valuable. In time, Philip learned how to fine-tune his diet and dosing strategies.
The two changes that had the biggest influence on his blood sugar were bringing down his daily fat consumption and front-loading the bulk of his meals to be eaten earlier in the day.
Achieving A Non-Diabetic A1c
His results made him very happy. Before starting the Mastering Diabetes program, his A1c was 7.5. After the first 3 months of small group coaching, it had come down to 6.2. Today, it is 5.6 – a non-diabetic A1c!
Philip also lost an additional 14 pounds and has no trouble keeping it off. His cholesterol and triglycerides were reduced, and he no longer takes any diabetes medication.

Header | August 2024 | July 2025 |
---|---|---|
A1c (%) | 7.5 | 5.6 |
Fasting Blood Glucose (mg/dL) | 120 | 85 |
Weight (lbs) | 180 | 166 |
Total Cholesterol | 180 | 140 |
Triglycerides | 103 | 75 |
Medications | Metformin | No Metformin |
One of the things that makes him the happiest is that he is no longer in the “pleasure trap”! He is no longer tempted by foods that do his body harm. Today, philip craves the food that is good for him. He enjoys his meals, and he wants to fill his plate (and body) with food that helps him to stay healthy and thrive.

Philip’s Advice For You
To anyone considering this lifestyle, Philip says to accept that it’s not just a diet – it’s a lifestyle. This is a long-term solution. He says you have to be willing to try something new and different.
As someone who used to work in the field of mental health and behavior change, Philip says to try it out for at least 6 months. You need to build new habits so that they stick.
He also says that the Mastering Diabetes small group program has everything you need in order to be successful. It provides you with the tools to use, the support to learn and understand, and the accountability to stay on track. If you want to be successful in reaching your goals, this is a sure way to make it happen.
