Off The Charts

Like many people, 2020 was a challenging year for Cat. On top of navigating a global pandemic, her mother passed away. So when she was feeling drained of energy, she assumed it was simply the result of stress.

However, when she started feeling unquenchable thirst, she knew something was awry. She’d been living with prediabetes for a few years, so she had a blood glucose monitor at home. She took a reading and it was so high that it was beyond the scale of what the monitor could measure. The next day she took another reading and her blood sugar was 33 mmol/L (which translates to 594 mg/dL in American units)! She knew right away that something was very wrong.

Cat was soon diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and an A1c of 10.9. This was a major wake-up call for her to start taking action to take better care of her health, and she got to work right away.

Low-Carb vs. High-Carb

However, she didn’t get a lot of information from her doctor about what to do. There was no follow-up appointment and she felt alone in finding the right course of action to support herself. Most of the information that she found pointed her towards a low-carb or ketogenic diet. However, Cat had been leaning towards a plant-based diet and knew her body was responding well to that approach, so she wanted to continue making progress along that path.

She eventually found the Mastering Diabetes program and read the book, and knew this was what she wanted to try. On Valentine’s Day, she gave herself the self-love gift of committing to the Mastering Diabetes Method.

Make It Easy To Do The Right Thing

She ended up purchasing the meal planner, and she credits this for making it all feel much smoother than it would have been without that guidance. Using the meal plan, she didn’t have to decide what to eat or spend time finding recipes or crunching numbers. She was able to follow the instructions and feel confident that she was eating meals that would support her in achieving her goals.

At first, some of the recipes looked a little questionable to Cat – for instance, mixing fruits and vegetables in the same meal didn’t sound appetizing. But she stuck to what she did feel excited to eat, and in time, she found herself craving and enjoying things she wouldn’t have expected to in the past!

Some of her favorite meals include the coconut black rice with tropical fruit, the chickpea waldorf salad, noodles with peanut sauce, asian slaw, and all the soups.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Three months after committing to the Mastering Diabetes Method, Cat had a doctor’s appointment. She was excited to see where her A1c would be. She had been feeling more energized and had less joint pain, and she knew her blood glucose numbers were better too. She was very happy to find that her A1c had improved even more than she’d hoped! In just 3 months it had dropped from 10.9 down to 6.9.

Her bloodwork had even more good news to share. Cat’s cholesterol had dropped over 60 points, her triglycerides dropped 113 points, and she lost 26 pounds. And this all happened through diet alone! Cat did not add any exercise or other new habits to her life.

She was excited to show her doctor that there is an alternative (and even better!) way to improve your health and master your diabetes than a low-carb approach – and she succeeded! Her doctor was impressed and took down the book information so that she could learn and share the information with her other patients.

Wondering If It Will Work For You?

We asked Cat what advice she would give to someone considering the Mastering Diabetes Method, who is perhaps on the fence about whether to give it a try. Her response was, “Just start!!” Just as she told herself when she was first looking into the program, “You have nothing to lose.” She said to get the book, or look at the YouTube channel, or listen to the podcast… but just start. Do what you can, and keep track of how you feel as you begin making diet changes.

Once you start, you’ll probably feel better. You might be surprised by how much better you feel, and that will motivate you to keep going. But you won’t know that until you try it out. So just start! Life is short, so just do it and see what happens. You won’t regret it!
