All right, for today's episode, you are going to hear from Ocean Robbins. Ocean has been in this space for a long, long time, and he is a very eloquent speaker, we’ll ask him a question and he'll go on to give us a bunch of little gems inside his answer. So listen up, carefully pay attention, every word that comes out of his mouth today is pure gold. I hope you guys enjoy it.

Robby Barbaro: Ocean Robbins is a true legend in the health field. His newly released book titled “31-Day Food Revolution: Heal Your Body, Feel Great, and Transform Your World” is out now.

He served as CEO and co-founder of the 500,000+ member Food Revolution Network, one of the largest communities of healthy eating advocates on the planet. Ocean has held hundreds of live seminars and events that have touched millions of lives in 190 nations.

His grandfather founded Baskin Robbins, and his father John Robbins walked away from the family company to write bestsellers like “Diet for New America”, and to become a renowned health advocate.

Now, Ocean is on a mission to transform the industrialized food culture into one that celebrates and supports healthy people, and a healthy planet. We are honored to speak with you today, Ocean. Thank you for joining us.

Ocean Robbins: Hey, I'm thrilled to be with you. And thanks for joining me in, I think one of the most important topics of our times; food is the foundation of health, or for many people, it's the foundation of disease. But when we eat the right foods and treat our bodies right, we can transform our lives, and we can transform our world. And I'd call that a pretty winning proposition.

Robby Barbaro: Yeah, that is a very much a winning proposition. It's beautiful. Now, you come from a pretty unique family, your grandfather founded an ice cream company called Baskin Robbins. Everybody's heard of Baskin Robbins. Can you tell us a little bit about that background, and how it forms the work you're doing today?

Ocean Robbins: Sure. So, my dad grew up with an ice cream cone shaped swimming pool, and 31 flavors of ice cream in the freezer, and he was groomed to one day join his dad and running the family company. But when he was in his early 20s, he was offered that chance, and he said no, and he walked away from a path that was practically paved with gold and with ice cream to, as we jokingly say in our family, he was going to follow his own rocky road.

And ended up moving with my mom to this little island off the coast of Canada, where they built a one room log cabin, grew most of their own food, practice yoga and meditation for several hours a day, and named their kid “Ocean”. Apparently they almost named me “Kale”, because they ate a heck of a lot of kale in those days. But thankfully, they took the conservative route when it came to naming their son and chose ocean instead.

But we did eat a lot of kale, and a lot of other vegetables that grew out of the garden. And I grew up thriving on a lot of whole plant foods. Then, years later, my dad ended up becoming a bestselling author, with books like Diet for New America. He inspired millions of people to look at food choices as a chance to make a difference in the world.

One of his readers ended up being my grandpa, Irvine Robbins. My grandpa had lost his brother in law and business partner to heart disease at the age of 54. Poor Baskin died pretty young. He had a family he loved, he had a business he loved, but he didn't have his health, and so he lost his life. And my grandpa was on death's door himself, in his early 70s with serious heart disease and type 2 diabetes and weight issues, and he ended up being given a copy of my dad's book by his doctor who suggested he follow its advice if he wanted to live.

So, my grandpa read the book, it saved his life, it changed his life, he got off all of his diabetes and blood pressure medications, he lost 30 pounds, his golf game improved seven strokes, he was a happy camper. He had given up ice cream, he'd given up most of his animal products, he was eating a whole lot more vegetables, and whole plant foods, and he was getting the results that you and I know are fairly predictable when we make those kinds of changes.

So, we've seen in our family what happens when we follow the standard American diet, which is that we get the standard American diseases. But we've also seen that when we make a change we can reap incredible benefits. And I'll tell you, if my grandpa who was one stubborn cookie, and who had a heck of a lot of investment in the belief that there was no connection between what we eat and our health, if he could make a change, if he could give up ice cream, and if he could get those kinds of benefits, then I think there's hope for the rest of us too.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: Absolutely! Never mind reversing diabetes, the fact that his golf game got better by seven strokes…

Ocean Robbins: Well, here’s the thing, a lot of us focus on diseases we don't want to have. And they say that pain pushes and vision pulls, right? And a lot of us look at all the things we don't want to have, and what's the cost of the status quo, and for many people, that's their primary motivation for change. But at the same time, a lot of us are motivated by what we want. And to me, life isn't just about eking out a few more years of misery in a wheelchair, life is about thriving. It's about loving our lives. It's about having a body that exudes confidence and joy, so we can celebrate our life, have more pleasure, have more satisfaction, be able to do the things that we cherish, have mental clarity all day long. And what I love about eating the right foods, and loving foods that love us back, is that it doesn't just add years to our lives. It also adds life to our years.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: Yeah. I could not agree with you more. It's almost like that Centrum Silver add. They used to say, “We can't guarantee that we would add years to your life, but we can add life to your years.” But here you're not using the supplement, you’re not using a pill, you’re using real food to get real results.

Now, just like Robby said in the introduction, you have a new book, The 31-Day Food Revolution that is becoming available on February 5th, 2019. So why did you decide to write The 31-Day Food Revolution?

Ocean Robbins: I wrote 31-Day Food Revolution, because all over the world I see people sick of being sick, fed up with toxic food, and hungry for a change. We're tired of being tired. We say enough is enough to a toxic food culture, and people are ready to make a difference. But here's the thing, for most people today, knowing what to do isn't enough, it's doing what we know that actually gets us results. And if all that was needed, if everyone just needed to know that sugar and processed junk is bad for us, and that vegetables are good for us in order to get real results, we would not have an obesity or diabetes epidemic in the world right now. But the reality is that for a lot of people there's a huge gap between knowledge and action, and that's massively reinforced by a culture where it's considered normal to eat food that is laced with chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, unhealthy toxic animal products, added sugars, and all this stuff is creating a toxic soup that is literally killing us.

So in this context, what's the pathway out? Well, I wrote 31-Day Food Revolution to show the simple step by step actions you can take to get results. So, there are 31 chapters… Obviously 31 is no coincidence, I'm saying that 31 steps to help can give you more satisfaction even than 31 flavors of ice cream.

And every single chapter ends with action steps you can take to implement what you've just been learning. So, the entire book is rooted in action, you know, at the end of the day, diabetes doesn't care a heck of a lot how many books you read, how many Podcasts you listen to, how many Summits you attend, it cares what you eat, and how you live. And the goal of all of the education we do is to help people put it into action. And so I wrote this book to be a simple guide posts and roadmap to help you do that.

The other thing that's kind of unique about this book is that there are four parts. Part one focuses on detoxification, clearing your body out, getting rid of the bad stuff. Part two focuses on nourishing how we can say yes to the healthy, real superfoods that empower our health and our vitality. Part three focuses on gathering your community, your web of relationships, your tribe, because we aren't just lone wolves, we're social animals, and so I want to show you how you can have more love, more human connection, more joy through healthy food and healthy food community. And then part four is transform, that's where we look at how our food choices can be a vote for the kind of world we want. Because at the end of the day, in a toxic food culture, most of us have to swim upstream just to do the right thing for ourselves and our families.

So I looked at why does it feel like you have to spend your whole paycheck just eat whole-foods? It's not coincidence, there are actually forces at play that make that predictable. Why is it that we have a food system that favors treating animals horribly, and torturing them in factory farms, and where farmers have to do- Risk their profits in order to treat animals decently? Why is it that we have a food industry were spraying food with pesticides, growing GMOs is more profitable for farmers?

It actually doesn't have to be that way, we can actually choose to create a new food culture where it's easier to do the right thing for everybody. Where schools serve real food, and healthy food for kids. Where hospitals serve real and healthy food for their patients. Where doctors learn about nutrition in medical school. And in part four I show you how we can put our own oxygen mask on first before helping others, and then how we can help save the freaking plane, because at the end of the day, I think we all care about the world we live in, and we all want to help the food system for us, for family, for our loved ones, for everyone we care about. And the spoiler alert here is, it's a lot easier to change the world than you probably ever imagined. And I'll show you how.

Robby Barbaro: Wow, I love this. I'm excited! I feel like it's a very comprehensive book, and there's going to be actions that people can use probably for all throughout the year, which makes it really unique. So, you touched on one of the themes about people on a budget, you talked about how that can be challenging. We know that organic food can be expensive. Can you tell us how people of any financial, or class, can eat organic foods and eat healthy?

Ocean Robbins: Absolutely. So, if you want to save money and save your health, and save your planet, all at the same time, there's a few steps you can take. Number one: Look at where you are wasting money, and cut out the waist. So number one is, the most expensive calories that you will ever consume are the ones you didn't need to eat in the first place. The average American eats about 500 calories too much on any given day. Why are we doing that? It's partly because we are addicted to junk foods. We have a food industry that is profiting massively off of producing foods that were designed to keep us addicted and hooked, and that you can't eat just one, it isn’t just a smart advertising slogan, it's actually laying down the gauntlet to the consumer with a threat, quite frankly, that they have more power than we do when it comes to our food choices. Well, I say no, I say we can turn it around, and I show you how in 31-Day Food Revolution, so you can break free.

Number two: The next most expensive calories you ever consume are the ones that make you sick. The foods that fuel cancer, and diabetes, and heart disease, and misery, and feeling like crap, because last time I checked, dementia was pretty expensive, cancer was pretty darn expensive. So I show you how you can break free from that in 31-Day Food Revolution.

And then, the next most expensive calories are restaurant foods, meals that are prepared out. And you know, I love eating out like anybody, and I love having the privilege and the pleasure of having food prepared for me, and not having going to do the cleanup, oh my Goodness! And getting to taste new textures and cuisines that somebody else spend time developing. But I also recognize it's a luxury, and it's a premium experience, and there's a lot of money to be saved by cutting down on that.

And then the next most expensive calories are the ones we waste in the fridge because they go bad. The average American family waste about $2,000 a year on food that simply goes to waste. So in 31-Day Food Revolution, I also show how you can develop a shopping list, and how you can develop routines that help you cut out the food waste, so that you can actually eat the food that you buy, and eat healthy foods that you love.

When you implement these simple steps, you can save a lot of real money that you can use towards other things in your life. Now, there's no question that some of the junkiest foods are relatively cheap, but when you implement these steps, you can actually end up with a lower food budget, and a much healthier quality of life.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: That is fantastic. Now, speaking of foods that we know are not necessarily healthy and promoting human health: GMOs, genetically modified organisms. In chapter 25 of your book, you discuss the myths and the truth about GMOs. So, tell us exactly what is a GMO, and what is the promise, and what's the reality in today's world?

Ocean Robbins: A lot of people think that GMO means “God! Move over”, but as you just mentioned, it doesn't, it means genetically modified organism. The promise of GMOs made by the biotechnology industry, Monsanto, now Bayer, Syngenta, Dow Chemical, the other companies behind this technology has been that they would give us more drought resistant crops, better yield, lower pesticide consumption, better flavor and better nutritional profiles.

But 25+ years into the mass cultivation of GMO crops in the food supply, we haven't gotten any of those benefits. They have not brought us better yields. They have not brought us more drought resistance, better flavor, a better nutrition, and they've actually led to a net increase of hundreds of millions of pounds of added pesticides on our crops.

What they have brought us is crops that are engineered with one or two of these traits. Number one: They're herbicide resistance. This means that they can be sprayed with glyphosate, or other toxic weed killers, and the weed killers will kill the weeds but not the plant that we're intending to cultivate. What this means is that human beings are for the first time in history, eating crops that were sprayed with large amounts of weed killer. In the past, we couldn't do that because it would kill the plant, but now we can. So we're eating weed killer.

Now, what is this doing to us? Well, we know that glyphosate, which is the primary one in widespread use today is a probable carcinogen, according to the World Health Organization, that means it probably causes cancer. We know that it's a known endocrine disruptor, and we know that it's been patented as an antibiotic, so it can kill bacteria. Now, you and I have a lot of bacteria in our digestive tract, they're extremely important to our ability to metabolize our foods, to digest our foods, to produce various neurotransmitters that put our brain in a good mood. The gut and the brain are deeply interconnected. And on a DNA level, you're mostly bacteria, because most of the bacteria in your body, they represent most of the DNA in your body. They are a huge part of how you feel, how you think, and even what you're hungry for.

So, what happens when we put weed killer into our digestive tract? Well, we don't exactly know. But there is a direct correlation between the rise in the use of glyphosate on our food crops, and the growth in food allergy rates, which have quintupled in the last generation. In the growth of all kinds of digestive problems, so called leaky gut syndrome, a lot of autoimmune disorders that we didn't even have a generation ago have become widespread. The correlation isn't causation, but when you see a correlation this strong, and you have some evidence that there could be a direct link, I think it bears further study.

The other major trade in GMO crops is that they are pesticide producers. They produce insecticides, like Bt in every cell of the plant. Now, Bt has traditionally been used in organic agriculture, when certain bugs eat it, their stomach split open, and they die, but it was used on the outside of the plants. Now we're spraying it, and not just spraying it, we're actually embedding it in every cell of the DNA of the plant. So we're eating large amounts of Bt in totally unprecedented quantities. Again, what's the impact of Bt along with glyphosate being in our food? We don't know exactly, but I don't know anybody who wants to sit down and drink this stuff.

So, if you like I are concerned about this, and concerned about the notion that we are human guinea pigs in a completely uncontrolled experiment, then I’d say, let's get informed, and let's make conscious choices here. And the conscious choice I want to make is to go organic, or to go on certified non-GMO with the primary GMO crops; that's corn, soy, cotton, which is used in cotton seed oil, canola for canola oil, also called rapeseed, and sugar beets, which are used in a lot of our sugar supply today.

So when you choose to go organic, or non-GMO with those crops, and with the various food additives that are made from them, then you can cut out your exposure to GMOs entirely, or dramatically.

So, those are some of the things we talked about in my book, and I really want to empower people with that knowledge. And also recognize that we can help shift the tide of history, the food industry is starting to realize that a lot of consumers don't like eating this stuff. It's why certified non-GMO products have become a $26 billion industry in the United States in just the last seven years. So, more and more people care, and as companies realize that some of them may start to go non-GMO, which can literally shift the tide of how food is growing, and ultimately help us get things kind of back on track.

Now, all that said, a lot of people get confused about the difference between GMOs and organics. And let me make this really clear: Organic is by definition non-GMO, but it goes some big steps further, because it also means that the food was grown without the use of neurotoxic synthetic pesticides, or without the use of synthetic fertilizers. So typically, organic food could be higher in nutrients, and it's definitely lower in pesticide residues. I think that's a good thing.

The average farm worker in my State of California has a life expectancy according to one report of 49 years. Farm workers are dying of cancer in droves in much higher rates than the general population. If you've ever heard of the canary in the coal mine, it's kind of like our farm workers are the Canaries, they are on the front lines handling this stuff day in and day out. If it's not good for them, it's probably not good for the rest of us to eat the foods directly that they're out there spraying all day, and it doesn't take a coal miner to know that pesticides are probably not healthy when you look at the data here.

So, my point is that absolutely going whole-foods, plant-based is the number one priority, and if you can go a step further and go non-GMO, and even further to go organic, you'll do your health and your world a big favor.

Robby Barbaro: I'm so glad you're doing this work. It's mind boggling how many people just don't even know the facts, and when somebody like you explain, “Hey, do you want weed killer inside your digestive tract?” And I remember in California, there was a place where people could vote, do we want GMOs to be on label, it's forced to be labeled as a GMO food or not, an industry one, and they didn't have to put it on the label. It's just amazing how they know they want people to not know the truth, and you're out here, you know, on this crusade, getting this information out. So it's really great.

Ocean Robbins: Thank you. Yeah, I'm pretty passionate about it. I think that what we eat matters a lot, and I think that how it's growing, and where it comes from matters too. Every dollar you spend is ultimately a vote, you're voting for the kind of world you want, and for the kind of health you want. And I wrote 31-Day Food Revolution to put the power to make that vote a conscious one into your hands, so that it's not usurped by food industry that's more interested in its own profits than your health. I mean, I've got no problem with profits, but I want healthy profits to come from healthy food. And I think that, right now, we've actually got a food industry that is finding very profitable to sell us products that are killing us and our kids. And that I have a problem with that, and I want to change that.

Robby Barbaro: I love it. And it shouldn't come from deception, you know, they’re making profit from deception, which is very sad. So, for every new book, every new copy of your book that is sold, you've pledged to donate to Trees for the Future, so they can plan an organic fruit or nut tree in a low income community. What inspired you to take this step?

Ocean Robbins: You know, I don't want healthy food to just be an elitist luxury, I want to get healthy food out to everybody who needs it, and can benefit from it. And one of the most powerful acts anybody can take is to plant fruit and nut trees, because we could all benefit with more fruits and nuts, and it's a gift that keeps on giving.

So, I aligned with Trees for the Future because they're bringing fruits and nut trees to some of the communities that need the most, like in Sub Saharan Africa, and every single one of these can feed a family or a village for generations, and that's a pretty powerful thing to be able to do. So for every single copy, new copy of 31-Day Food Revolution that anybody gets, you can know that another fruit or nut tree is going to be planted in a low income community, because of your purchase. And it's one of the simple ways that I'm choosing to walk my talk, if you will, and plant it, and there are so many.

At the end of the day, this entire book is all about putting the power in your hands, where it belongs, and helping you to be an agent of change on this planet. Because, you know, I think we all could probably agree that there are some pretty big problems in the world right now. Wherever you are on the political spectrum, whatever your religious affiliations are, whatever your ideology is, there's a big gap between how things are and the way that most of us would kind of like them to be. And many of the problems we face can seem overwhelming, insurmountable and comfortable even, and, you know, political stuff, war and peace, all kinds of issues that like, what can one individual do? I don't think we feel like a drop in the bucket, I think we feel like a drop in the sea.

But there are some places where we have immense power, and food happens to be one of them, perhaps the number one of them, because when it comes to your food choices, you absolutely have control over what you choose to eat, and where you choose to shop, and how you choose to pursue it. I mean, most of us do, obviously, some people are literally just trying to survive day to day, but if you do have choice, then that's an incredible privilege. And I want to show you how you can put it into power so that you can actually use it to facilitate support for your health, predictably and consistently. And how you can contribute to building a healthier world with a more stable climate, with stable top soil to grow food for future generations, with water for future generations, with healthier food system for our kids and our elders, and our veterans. So that everybody regardless of how much money they have, or where they come from, can have access to real healthy food. So Trees for the Future is one resource, there are so many. But the bottom line is, we can do it, we can make a change, and I'm here to help put that power in your hands.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: Ocean, what I heard from what you just said was that, if I purchase a copy of your book, you're going to plant a mango tree in my backyard? So…

Ocean Robbins: …Unless you consider the earth, your backyard, and then maybe so…

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: Well, if you could just make sure that as many of those trees Are mango trees as possible, I'm a happy camper. No problem.

Ocean Robbins: Sounds good to me.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: Why don't you tell people where they can purchase your book? How can they find out more information about it? And where can they go exactly to get it?

Ocean Robbins: Okay, well, 31-Day Food Revolution: Heal Your Body, Feel Great, and Transform Your World it's available wherever good books are sold, so grab it in a bookstore. You can get it online, of course. You can go to 31DayFoodRevolution.com. to get it from us and get some extra fabulous bonuses with your purchase. Wherever you choose to get it, get it. Take advantage of it and recognize it makes a great gift, what better gift is there to give someone you love than the gift of health. And you know, I wrote this book for you, and for everyone you love, and for the future of life on this planet, because food is powerful, and life is precious, so let's put food into action to support life.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: Absolutely. Thanks for taking the time to be here with us today. There's a lot of diet books on the market today, there's a lot of books about food on the market.

Ocean Robbins: Yeah, there sure are.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: I have a sinking suspicion that your book is going to be fundamentally different, and just like you're saying, It's filled with a bunch of actions steps, and it really teaches you a lot about the current food ecosystem in which we are immersed in ways that you can consciously decide to get out of it, and start to create a new Food Revolution. And that is something that I think it's truly revolutionary, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the book myself.

Ocean Robbins: Awesome. All right, I can't wait to share it with you, and with the whole world. To everybody listening right now: This is your Food Revolution, and I thank you for every bite you take, every step you take to make food into a vote for the health you want, and the world you want. And if 31-Day Food Revolution can support you on that path, then I'm thrilled, and most of all, I want to thank you and congratulate you for every step you take as a food revolutionary, because we are actually, and quite literally, changing the way food is grown, the way it's processed, the way it's consumed, the way people think about it, and we're shifting the course of history together. So long live the revolution, let's do this together.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: Thanks again, Ocean. We really appreciate it.

Ocean Robbins: Thank you so much. You both are awesome.

Cyrus Khambatta, PhD: We hope you enjoyed this episode, and can apply some of these principles to your personal life. Now, we have an Online Group Coaching Program that has helped thousands of people living with all forms of diabetes, reverse insulin resistance, drop their A1c, lose weight, and gain tons of energy. And also reduce their need for oral medication and insulin using, their food as medicine.

We like to call ourselves the world's most robust, and ridiculously affordable, Online Coaching Program for people with diabetes. And we've helped people living with type 1 diabetes, type 1.5 diabetes, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes living all around the world.

Now we provide you with three tools that are specifically designed to put you in the driver's seat of your diabetes health. The first is an Online Course that gives you step by step instructions on how to change your diet. Starting with breakfast, then lunch, then dinner.

We teach you exactly which foods to increase, which foods to limit, and which foods to avoid entirely. The course is designed with you in mind. We provide you with relevant information, and we do our best to reduce overwhelm, because we know just how confusing the internet can be these days, when searching for simple ways to improve your blood glucose control.

The second tool is even better than the first. We provide you with access to our online community, with thousands of people that are going through this process with you. You'll be able to interact with our team of coaches, including Kylie Buckner, a Registered Nurse who is brilliant. She also happens to be my wife, and is one of the most kind and compassionate human beings that I've ever met. Adam Sud. He reversed type 2 diabetes. He lost more than 160 pounds and he de-addicted himself from both food and prescription medication at the same time.

You'll also get to interact with Mark Ramirez, who lost more than 50 pounds, reversed type 2 diabetes, and is a certified Food For Life Instructor, through the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. You'll also get the ability to interact with both Robby and myself in the online community. And we guarantee that we’ll answer your question within 24 hours to help you solve problems in real time.

The third tool is a twice monthly Q&A video conference, where you can ask our team of coaches any question that you have about your personal program, and meet others that are going through this process with you. Now, we're proud to say that our coaching program is very popular, and because of that, we've instituted a waiting list to join. The reason we created the waiting list in the first place is because we have more than 2000 active members in our program and want to provide excellent service to our existing members. You can still join the program, but in order to do so you have to put yourself on the waiting list and you'll be notified of when we open next. When we do, we'll send you a personal invitation to join.

To join the waiting list simply go to www.masteringdiabetes.org and click on Coaching in the navigation bar at the top of the screen, or click the link below in the show notes. We can't wait to help you transform your diabetes health from the inside out. We hope to see you on the inside.
